Created in partnership with Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary is located in Iceland and will become the new home to its first residents, two female beluga whales, Little Grey and Little White. The belugas will be moving into their new ocean sanctuary in the spring of 2020, and you can read more about it here.<\/p>
Little Grey and Little White began their journey in Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai, China. Their journey to their new Sanctuary home spans an incredible 6,000-miles by air, land and sea to a large sanctuary in a natural bay at Heimaey, one of the Westman Islands, located off the southern coast of Iceland.<\/p>
The secluded bay, which measures up to 32,000 sqm with a depth of up to 10m, was chosen to provide a more natural sub-Arctic environment and wild habitat for these amazing whales to call home.<\/p>

There are more than 3,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises held in tanks. To end captivity, we need to find somewhere for them to go.<\/p>
But it\u2019s not easy. You can\u2019t just take a whale or dolphin out of a captive environment and return them to the ocean. Some may need human care for the rest of their lives, and those who are suitable for a return to the wild will need to re-learn the skills they will need to survive. This is where wild sea sanctuaries come in, and we have helped to create Captivity is not conservation \u2013 it is cruel. Whales and dolphins are taken from their families, imprisoned and forced to perform. For an individual who is used to swimming many miles every day, a tank is a featureless prison cell.<\/p>
Like us, whales and dolphins are intelligent beings, capable of feeling joy and suffering pain.<\/p>
Like us, they live in complex social groups, pass on culture through generations, engage in play and even grieve the loss of family and friends. Understanding and appreciating this social complexity is essential to ensure that whale and dolphin populations not only survive, but thrive.<\/p>
The Iceland sanctuary is one of the biggest developments in captive whale and dolphin care and protection, and the first of its kind to be created for whales and dolphins.
